Inspired loosely by the Serpentine Range near Queenstown in New Zealand’s South Island, the work combines bold colour with sweeping movement across the landscape. The sky is alive with striations of yellow, blue and white, where a pair of birds glide in silhouette above the distant peaks. Along the horizon, a mountain range rises in layered greys with touches of white where light catches the snow. Rich umber, sienna and black tones form the midground, while the foreground flows with turquoise and grey, threaded with fine gold lacing that suggests water moving along the shore. Undulating lines ripple through the lower portion of the painting, echoing the serpentine forms of the land and lending the work a sense of rhythm and movement.
