Artist Statement: ‘Sanctuary Mountain’, or Maungatautari Mountain, is an ecological island. An extensive project was undertaken to ring fence the mountain, providing a safe habitat for native species to be re-established and protected. 
This painting features the native wood pigeon, or kereru, with the mountain viewed across Lake Karapiro in the early autumn.
