A friend once photographed a cow waiting quietly in a cattle trailer on a rural road. I found the image both beautiful and hauntingly sad. Her calm yet mesmerising gaze, framed by the narrow gap in the metal truck, reminded me of a woman’s eyes glimpsed from behind a niqab.
In the painting, that connection becomes literal: reflected in the cow’s eye is the image of a woman, her head and shoulders veiled, only her eyes visible.
Both figures reveal just enough to meet the viewer’s gaze. Both invite the same quiet question — is she free? And perhaps a deeper one: if we have never known another way, might freedom still exist within the mind?
