Artist Statement: With many native trees in the Pirongia area to attract the nectar feeding birds, there are an abundance of Tui’s visiting at certain times of the year. As nightfall approaches the Tui’s head back towards the mountain to roost, crossing the Waipa River along the way. ‘Kakarauri’ was inspired by this daily flight pattern which will be familiar to many local residents. When translated into Maori, ‘dusk’ - kakarauri - also means ‘hardly seen’, which relates well to the hidden elements that I often incorporate into my work.
