Artist Statement: Mt Karioi in the Waikato is often referred to as the sleeping lady. According to Maori legend the Karioi was a jilted Maori Princess who, upon discovering that love was lost, lay down and rests. This painting is inspired by the view of Mt Karioi from Ruapuke Road, Raglan, looking up the valley across the Toreparu Stream.
